Inspired by Jan’s Custom Rear Luggage Rack I finally sat down to design my own. As a basis I used the Touratech Rear Luggage Rack and replace the original aluminum plate with a laser cut custom designed 4mm plate. After taking some basic measurments I started to create the plate with Tinkercad.
I made sure the plate will be just wide enough to not get in the way with the panniers lids when they flip open. The plate is 500x300mm and will hold my Enduristan Tornado 2 bag. There are plenty of 8mm stripe holes to tie everything down. It was a lot of fun to think about how it could work best. I easily spent 8 hours in total on it. Once I was happy with the design it was exported to .svg and converted to .dxf. Feel free to tinker your own by using mine as a basis.
After doing some basic research I ended up at Cutworks.de who have a nice online tool which allows you to calculate the costs of your design. Neat. The online validator helped me to sort out some issues with my .dxf file. Only the delivery time of more than 3 weeks was a bit too long. The plate required some sanding on all cut edges which was quickly done with some sandpaper.
The bending of the edges was done at a metal works shop (Metallbau Kümmel / Eschborn) down the road where I worked. For 20 Euros I had a nice chat and had my metal bending needs covered.

Isn’t it a beauty?
